Chronic Pain Management Belmore

The Narrow Gate Physiotherapy team are compassionate experts in managing difficult, complex, and chronic presentations of pain. You’re in the right place.

What is Chronic Pain?

Pain is regarded as chronic when it persists for most days of the week for at least 3 months. At Narrow Gate Physiotherapy in Belmore, we see many patients who describe their pain as chronic because it is intense, persistent, or both. We specialise in treating chronic pain—whether it has been ongoing for a long time, is very painful, or both.

Here are some important facts about chronic pain:

  • 1 in 5 Australians suffer from chronic pain.
  • The leading cause of chronic pain is injury, often from sport, car accidents, home accidents, or workplace incidents.
  • Most people (>60%) with chronic pain report that it interferes with daily activities.
  • It can disrupt sleep patterns, sexual activity, work, and everyday tasks.
  • Chronic pain can also cause emotional distress and contribute to serious mental health issues, including depression.

Chronic pain is often treated with limited success by traditional approaches. At Narrow Gate Physiotherapy, we take a comprehensive, evidence-based approach, considering all aspects of your condition. The solution doesn’t have to rely solely on long-term medication, injections, or surgery—we focus on effective, personalised strategies to help you regain function and reduce pain.

Do You Want to Reduce Medication and Avoid Injections or Surgery?

Medication alone is not the most effective way to treat chronic pain. Chronic pain is best managed using a combination of approaches. While pain-relief medication can be part of the plan, effective management should also include:

  • Strength and conditioning of your body
  • Mobility training
  • Encouragement to engage in challenging tasks
  • A supportive environment and expert team
  • Mindful activities
  • Education around stress reduction

At Narrow Gate Physiotherapy, our core measures for improvement focus on strength, flexibility, and your ability to perform meaningful activities.

Through years of supporting people with chronic pain, we’ve seen the “use it or lose it” principle play a major role. Reduced activity due to pain can lead to loss of muscle mass, flexibility, and strength, making everyday tasks harder. Our goal is to help you regain confidence and capacity in your body so that you can live life fully—without relying solely on medication, injections, or surgery.

Case Study – “Patient A”

Patient A, a 38-year-old office worker, had been experiencing persistent low back pain for over 5 years following a minor car accident. The pain affected daily activities, including sitting at work, lifting objects, and participating in recreational sports.

After multiple consultations with other healthcare providers, Patient A sought physiotherapy at Narrow Gate Physiotherapy in Belmore. During the initial assessment, our team conducted a comprehensive evaluation, including posture, strength, flexibility, and functional movement analysis.

A personalized rehabilitation plan was created, combining:

  • Targeted strength and conditioning
  • Mobility and flexibility exercises
  • Gradual exposure to functional daily activities
  • Education around pain science, stress management, and pacing

Over 12 weeks, Patient A gradually regained mobility, improved core strength, and reduced reliance on pain medication. By the end of the program, they were able to return to light sports and everyday activities with significantly reduced pain, reporting improved confidence in movement and functional independence.
