Nerve Pain

Nerve pain can worsen quickly, impacting your ability to move, work, and enjoy daily life. At Narrow Gate Physiotherapy, we specialise in assessing and treating nerve-related conditions with expert care.

What is Nerve Pain?

Nerve pain can feel like electric currents, sharp shocks, burning sensations, cold or crawling feelings, or even flowing sensations along your arm or leg. It’s often accompanied by pins and needles, numbness, or muscle weakness.

Nerves are the body’s communication lines, carrying messages between your brain and the rest of your body. Nerve pain occurs when these signals are disrupted—damaged nerves can distort messages, create new pain signals, or block normal signals altogether. In some cases, even non-painful signals can feel painful. The result? Pain that can range from mild irritation to severe discomfort.

At Narrow Gate Physiotherapy, the most common nerve pain we see comes from injuries to the neck or lower back. However, nerve pain can arise from many causes, including:

  • Long-term illnesses, such as diabetes
  • Neurodegenerative conditions, including Parkinson’s disease
  • Guillain-Barre syndrome
  • Shingles
  • Chemotherapy or other cancer treatments
  • Surgery
  • Trauma or accidents
  • Infections

Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial. Nerve pain can be effectively managed if caught early, but delays make recovery more challenging. Our Belmore physiotherapists specialise in timely assessment, tailored treatment, and rehabilitation to reduce symptoms, restore function, and prevent further complications.

When needed, we work closely with leading pain specialists to ensure you have access to medications, surgical options, or advanced interventions—integrating these seamlessly into your recovery plan.

What Types of Nerve Pain Can Narrow Gate Physiotherapy Help With?

At Narrow Gate Physiotherapy, we assess and treat a wide range of nerve-related conditions, including:

  • Peripheral Neuropathy – often affecting the hands, feet, arms, or legs, causing tingling, numbness, or burning sensations.
  • Lumbar Radiculopathy – when nerves in the lower back are compressed, leading to pain, tingling, or weakness radiating into the legs.
  • Cervical Radiculopathy – when nerves in the neck are compressed, causing arm pain, numbness, or headaches.

How Do I Know Which Type I Have?

The only reliable way to know is through a thorough assessment by an expert physiotherapist. Many people delay treatment, spending weeks or months on scans, GP visits, and referrals that aren’t necessary to start improving.

At Narrow Gate Physiotherapy, we prioritise early assessment and early treatment. Once we understand your condition, we can create a targeted plan to reduce pain, restore function, and prevent further complications. If additional investigations or specialist referrals are needed, we coordinate them seamlessly, so your recovery stays on track from day one.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Which therapists at Narrow Gate Physiotherapy are best at treating nerve pain?
We have multiple practitioners who are experts at helping people with nerve pain. Jonathan and Rashmi have specifically trained in this area. Jason is also excellent with rehabilitation of chronic low back pain and nerve pain, using modern techniques for nerve and chronic pain management.
It’s possible, but unlikely. The vast majority of scans done for nerve pain are expensive and unnecessary so we recommend an assessment for a recommendation of whether a scan is worthwhile.
With both personal experience as well as study, the Narrow Gate team have become the go-to practice for treating nerve pain. We regularly treat other medical practitioners such as specialists, chiropractors and other physiotherapists.
